This Friday, after I watched "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", my "Movies I've seen List" has reached 700th movies. I can't imagine that I've also reached the "someday" that I can organized the movie list by different categories or years.
I wanna introduce a category that we like to say you won't "step on a landmine" in Chinese, we also describe a bad restaurant as a "landmine". I can remember all the musical films I've ever seen, even some songs, and always have good impressions about them. Unlike dance, choir and cheerleading films, musical can have various story lines, not just: bad start-practice-frustrated-winning a competition. Even the story is okay, as long as I enjoy the music, I don't care! :P
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a 1975 musical comedy horror film based on a musical stage play "The Rocky Horror Show". The TV series "GLEE" introduced me to this musical. "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" is the fifth episode of season 2. This movie won me over right from the beginning, red lips singing "Science Fiction/Double Feature". After Brad and Janet entered Dr. Frank-N-Furter's castle, I can't help choose my ideal actors/actress for each character, because everyone's personality and appearance are so vivid! Next year will be this musical's 40th anniversary, wish I have a chance to see it!
Grease, a 1978 musical film which is also based on musical from 1971. Besides music, also fashion and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John were totally Ken & Barbie attracted me! : ) My favorite song is "Summer Nights" by Pink Ladies and T-Birds. I heard this song for the first time was again... in GLEE, and it was sung by Sam and Mercedes.(Sorry about I'm so into GLEE:P) The charisma of John Travolta and the vibrancy of California's sunshine & cars, how can you miss feeling the energy of this movie?
The High School Musical trilogy(2006, 2007, 2008), I know this movie is not veritably good, especially compared to other movies in this article, but I did enjoy it, and you should understand I was a teenager then! It's actually not that bad, the first installment became the most successful film that Disney Channel Original Movie ever produced, and the soundtrack was the best-selling album in the United States for 2006. I have this album, but can't remember when's the last time I listen to it.:P Can't believe it was 6 years ago when Troy Bolton and Gabriella met at a New Year's Eve party and sang Start of Something New together. After you finish watching the trilogy, don't forget to watch "High School Musical 4" on Saturday Night Live! :D
Hairspray, a 2007 American musical film based on the 2002 Broadway musical. John Travolta played Tracy's MOM! This is worth seeing enough, he reminds me of Freddie Mercury in "I want to break free" music video. Love the amazing cast and the fatal cuteness of 60s, this is the most bright and enjoyable musical film! You can hardly hate villains in this movie. Michelle Pfeiffer played Velma Von Tussle, a former beauty queen, she's a racist and weightist, but I still thought she's so damn beautiful. At the end, Tracy and Link kissed in The Corny Collins Show, I really wanted to sing and dance to "You Can’t Stop the Beat" with them!
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a 2007 horror musical black comedy film directed by Tim Burton; an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Tony Award-winning 1979 musical. I watched every Johnny Depp-Tim Burton movies, so watching this movie was a must-do, and it happened to be a musical film. It's a Burton movie, so you can expect the stunning visuals, the dark and smoggy nineteenth century London which is perfect for the story and music. I know Johnny Depp plays music, but is not known for his singing. Surprisingly, his staggering performance perfectly merges the story. This could be one of the best movies of his career.
Mamma Mia!, a 2008 romantic comedy film adapted from the 1999 West End/2001 Broadway musical, it's based on the songs of ABBA. I have the "Number Ones" album of ABBA, so when I watched this movie in theater, I was so proud I can sing every song! There are lots of things surprised me, James Bond(Pierce Brosnan) can sing and I wondered which genius wrote this story and connected with songs all from ABBA!!(Catherine Johnson did) The thing I love the most is the lovely girl- Amanda Seyfried. She made her film debut in Mean girls, she has grown so much that I almost forgot the stupid Karen Smith. I can't wait to see her in "Les Misérables". Lastly, I wanna say WHY ISN'T MY LIFE A MUSICAL!! : )
